Mighty Robot DVD - Liars, Lightning Bolt +More

May 31st, 2007

Mighty Robot Lives Again! Well, on DVD anyway. Contact Records announced its first DVD release, and it exhumes the archives of the once mighty underground venue in NYC. Up until its much grieved demise in 2005, Mighty Robot hosted shows by our fave NYC bands - Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, TV on the Radio, Les Savy Fav, and the Anchorage-Alaska-fronted, SF-based Coachwhips. While you can still catch these bands on stage today, you can no longer catch the Mighty Robot anywhere other than fading memories and this jam packed DVD.

Sunn O))) New Release + Tour W/ Wolf Eyes, Wolves in the Throneroom, Merzbow

May 30th, 2007

Sunn O))) has announced more tour dates on their artist page at Southern Lord Records! I guess the Pacific Rim and Roadburn festival were good to them, because after they play the Sonar Festival in Barcelona, they will be playing one show in the UK and then heading home to the US for some west coast shows with label mates and mentors, Earth.

Dang I wish I could have been at that Roadburn, but I would be happy to catch their performance in Belgium with Wolf Eyes. One of my very favorite Sunn O))) performances ever was with Wolf Eyes at the Lobot in Oakland. Both bands have been a huge musical influence on me. My bandmate in T113 grew up in Ann Arbor and was friends with Nate of Wolf Eyes, thus sharing some of the same musical influences and ideas. My mate first introduced me to Wolf Eyes’ brilliant chaotic noise and I was hooked. I think an ideal show for our band T113 would be with Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes and Merzbow in Japan (where they truly appreciate noise as an artform). This festival in Belgium comes awfully close! Who wants to fly T113 out to the Dour Festival to perform as well?

Also on this upcoming tour, Sunn O))) will playing shows with Wolves in the Throneroom, whom I have also mentioned as a fantastic metal band. If you get the chance, definitely catch them live. They are TIGHT, and play furiously passionate metal. T113 has played shows with them, and Wolves has honored us on a few occasions by playing on our soundsystem, including at the Autonomous Mutant Festival. In fact one of my fave live performances as T113 was with Wolves in the Throneroom at Overload in Oakland. My mic wasn’t working, but my mate and I played a killer set that included a doom metal cover of Ledbelly’s “In The Pines”. The guys of Wolves in the Throneroom are such down to earth and sweet people in addition to playing stellar, dark music. Not theatrical, like Sunn O))) but intense nonetheless.

Get Guru & Solar Remix Of Gym Class Heroes

May 30th, 2007

7Grand Records artists Guru and Solar have been busy with the Jazzmatazz series, they are up to Volume 4 which compiles Common, Omar, Blackalicious, Raheem Devaughn and more. There is no release date set for Vol.4 yet, but there is a new treat from the superproducers - they recently gave the remix treatment to the Gym Class Heroes song “Cupid’s Chokehold” (which was #1 on the Billboard chart when GCH released it). The remix is not officially released yet, but GIANT STEP couldn’t wait to share it. You can download it from their page or listen to it on Guru’s music $pace.

Get more info at GIANT STEP. You can read or listen to an interview with Solar and Guru on the 7 Grand website. The 7 Grand website has all kinds of goodies by and about these 2, so you might want to spend some time wandering around there.

Throbbing Gristle - Reports On The Reunion, New Album

May 29th, 2007

There is an excellent article in the UK Times Online today about the current reunion of Throbbing Gristle, a band which continues to be a huge influence on me in many ways. The Times discusses with the members of TG their reasons for reforming, their recent performances, and how easy it was to start working together again. They recently released their first album in 26 years, PART TWO The Endless Not which is available from their online store.

Throbbing Gristle - Part Two The Endless Not

Tracklist For PART TWO The Endless Not

1. Vow Of Silence
2. Rabbit Snare
3. Separated
4. Almost A Kiss
5. Greasy Spoon
6. Lyre Liar
7. Above The Below
8. Endless Not
9. The Worm Waits It Turn
10. After The Fall

Last month, the group played with a choir of 20 singers at the Donau Festival in Austria. This last weekend, they played a live musical score for early Super 8 films by Derek Jarman. Chris Carter has a flickr page with photos from the Donau, likely he will be adding photos from the performance this weekend as well. But, there is still another chance to see them live if you are in London and it sounds as if they will be scheduling more shows in the future. According to the Times Online article:

“It seems to us now,” says Christopherson on their reasons for reforming, “that the record business is in as bad a situation as it was in the 1970s, if not worse. It’s not really able to make a statement unless it’s directly related to putting cute boys and cute girls onstage. We felt it was important that our message could be heard again, and people could realise that music can mean something.”

Cosey Fanni Tutti, who has remained active with a solo career as well as the excellent duo Chris and Cosey with fellow TG member Chris Carter (who also maintained an amazing solo experimental electronica careers - at times my very favorite artist, and one who I have been massively inspired by in my own musical efforts), went on to say in the article that it was incredibly easy to start working as TG again because each member continues to share the same desire and message to communicate through music. Christopherson elaborates by stating that the next project with TG is always the most exciting one. Good news for TG fans that would like to see a revival of their controversial interpretations on what popular music sounds like and how it is presented and integrated with the public sphere!

Shows

June 1-3 TG - The Desertshore Installation at the Institute Of Contemporary Art, London
TG return to the ICA London (ica.org.uk) for a series of public ‘Recording Sessions’.

Jah Cure Performs For First Time In 8 Years

May 29th, 2007

I reported in March that there is a possibility of reggae/dancehall singer Jah Cure being released from prison this July. It has been rumored that he would be out in time to play the legendary Reggae Sunsplash concert in Jamaica this summer. Well, I haven’t heard further news of his release, but 3 promotions teams are organizing shows for him to perform at later this summer, which would lead one to believe that the plans for his release are becoming more solid.

Jah Cure Will Sing Songs Of Freedom Summer 2007

One such event is scheduled for August 24-26th and its being called Curefest in celebration of Jah Cure’s return to music and his community. Organizers of Curefest are promoting it as a vessel to bring conciousness back to reggae and dancehall music. According to press statements reported by Reggae Country news:

The festival will showcase positive cultural, dancehall and international artistes, bringing a higher level of consciousness to Jamaica over the course of 3 days.

Friday August 24, Reflection is an all-inclusive tribute dinner event hosted by Danger Zone Records.

Saturday August 25, 45 Cure’s is a selector spin-off and stage show where Radio DJ’s compete with Sound System DJ’s to play the best Jah Cure dub / mix. The night will also feature performances by Dancehall artistes.

Sunday August 26, Longing For, is the final night of the festival when Jah Cure and his local and international celebrity friends will perform.

Curefest marks Jah Cure’s first performance in 8 years and is set for August 24-26, 2007 on the North Coast of Jamaica.

I will report any further news that I find on Jah Cure, so watch this space. You can also check over at Reggae Country news for further info.

Virtual World Will Hit The Big Silver Screen

May 28th, 2007

In other virtual news, Electronic Arts has just sold the movie rights for The Sims to 20th Century Fox.

ok ok ok ok, wait one second. The Sims is a super fun game (I especially like making the bathroom unreasonably small and watching the wifey grumble!) and Second Life looks scarily fun too, but a movie about simulated life? Oh, right, all movies are about simulated life. Carry on then.

According to Reuters:

“The Sims has done an interactive version of an old story, which is what it’s like to have infinite power and how do you deal with it,” the Hollywood industry paper quoted Rod Humble, head of The Sims Studio at EA, as saying.

EA Sells SIMS Movie Rights To Fox

Speaking of unlimited power, The Sims is one of the best selling computer games of all time with 85 million copies sold in 7 years, plus multiple franchises and expansions. 20th Century Fox is owned by Rupert Murdoch’s global vertically integrated media company, News Corp. You may recall that EA joined forces with Nettwerk Publishing in early April. If not, feel free to jump over to an earlier post about that.

Second Life Brings Live Concerts To Virtual Reality

May 28th, 2007

First there were live concerts, then radio broadcasts of live concerts. Next there were TV broadcasts of live concerts, and then there were recordings of live concerts. With the widespread use of internet, came streaming concerts online, now with streaming video as well. Now, all of that has reached the next step. Virtual world Second Life is getting more and more “live” concerts. Suzanne Vega, Duran Duran and Ben Folds have all played in avatar form in Second Life, with views of the “real” concert playing on the big screen over the stage. Now with so many different channels for experiencing a live performance, an online viewer can choose between which cameras to view the action from. One could switch between close up cameras on stage, middle row shots, full stadium shots, as well as viewing the virtual avatars, or all cameras at once. Better yet, it could be seamlessly integrated into one experience, melding the virtual and the real together into one. A great example of this was reported today from Denver, Colorado where ManiaTV was holding a concert in a previously abandoned warehouse. According to yahoo news:

those watching the Internet stream on ManiaTV saw the event not only from the perspective of multiple camera angles, but also from the point of view of a special Second Life “cam” that spliced in shots of the different bands’ avatars performing in the virtual world. Meanwhile, those in Second Life watching the avatars perform were also viewing video of the real thing streamed from a large screen behind the virtual “stage.” And those in the studios watching it live could also see what was happening in both, on about 25 TV monitors set up throughout the space.

In an industry that is crying over drops in cd sales and the internet takeover, this could be the next big music product. Read the report on yahoo news for more details.

Second Life Rocks With Live Concerts

BBC news has also been dipping its toes into the Second Life. Last year BBC Breakfast conducted its first interview in Second Life.

HearingTest Gets A New Look!

May 27th, 2007

Those readers who are visiting this page via the homepage can plainly see (i hope!!), that this site has just had a complete renovation. If you are reading this via a reader or email post, please visit the website at your convenience and let me know how it looks. I hope you are able to see everything well enough. I will be making adjustments and improvements constantly until it looks absolutely fantastic on everyone’s computer, so if anything is not working out in your view of this site - please email me! In the meantime, i just wanted to get this up and running. The colour palette is very dark for a very good reason - these colours are intended to save quite a bit of energy and therefore be more environmentally conservative. It takes more energy/electricity to illuminate a monitor screen to make it appear white, it takes half as much energy to appear dark blue, green, and red, and even less to produce black. In fact, black might be the total absence of light in this case. For more information on low-watt web palettes, visit these pages:

Black Google On TreeHugger

I will be posting more very soon about conserving energy on the internet, blogging on wordpress, CSS control, etc…

So Stay Tuned!
And as always, THANKS FOR VISITING!!!

OzzFest Is Free Unless You Want To Party Like A Rockstar With A Platinum Credit Card

May 25th, 2007

Not everybody likes the idea of a free show. For some, the cost in time and effort spent is more expensive then forking out the cash. Some die hard metal fans may be loyal OzzFest attendees, but are considering skipping this year, just because of the convoluted series of hoops to be jumped through and mazes to be navigated that is necessary to acquire a ticket to the FreeFest. Well, if you are in one of these categories, then i may have the solution for you. Ozzfest has announced that it will be offering different levels of VIP packages with various degrees of access to rewards. The 3 levels are:

Party Like a Rockstar - $300 - better-than-free seating, access to the VIP viewing platform and general VIP area, and a behind-the-scenes tour

I’m Part of the Show - $666 - all the above plus a seat on the main stage during Ozzy’s closing performance

Platinum - auction, bidding starts at $1K - all the above plus meet Ozzy face-to-face, and receive a special certificate signed by Sharon.  The proceeds from the sale of these tickets (limited to 10 per show) will benefit the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

So far, the official Ozzfest website does not have details of the packages, so watch the VH1 website for more info.

2 Songs From Sonic Youth Daydream Nation Streaming

May 25th, 2007

Rolling Stone has the goods today - 2 songs off the upcoming deluxe edition of Daydream Nation from Sonic Youth.  You can listen to streaming audio of “Teen Age Riot” and “Silver Rocket” off the RS blog.  Of course, most dyed in the wool Sonic Youth fans already have these in their collections (the streams are the older unremastered versions from the first release), but it’s a nice taste for those of you who have discovered SY long after the 1988 release of the original album.  The streams accompany a bit of info about the upcoming deluxe edition album which hits the streets on June 12th.
