Panda Bear uploaded their new video for “Comfy In Nautica.” It’s a lovely laid back skate video (total opposite of the adrenaline rush of most amped up sk8 vids) and the song is sublimely nice, like sitting on the beach watching the surfers.
Hope you got your freak on for Halloween! Now it’s time to celebrate Dia de los Meurtos, the day to dance with the dead! This new video from Aesop Rock gets the ghoul ball rolling with a tribute to classic horror flicks: ([More →])
Iz been a minnit since I was able to publish anything on HearingTest. It’s been a crAzy week and all - my book just been published, the Vex’d show on Friday night was insane, over the weekend we had non-stop back2back performances from Aaron Spectre (aka Drumcorps) and Duran Duran Duran, not to mention just visiting with them and sittin round the fire… From Friday until Monday morning I was dancing in front of a different stack of speakers every night, so I might be half deaf now (but I DO wear earplugs and so should you!) It’s been a full week of the kind of moments I live for, totally blissful, I wish it never had to end. But here it is Wednesday and I’m just starting to wake up and get back to work. Sorry about the interruption, I’ll try to make it up with a flurry of new stuff and hopefully some pix from the parties. If all goes well, here’s wot’s comin up soon -
Reviews of The Pack and Kafani’s new albums
Pix and video from the Aaron Spectre/Drumcorps, Duran Duran Duran, R.A.W., Meat Beat Manifesto, Rtype, Naked Slice and more Halloween party last weekend
A bunch of new videos out this week
Maybe pix of my new book - Reggae Scrapbook by Roger Steffens and Peter Simon with 2 chapters by me!
And who knows what else, we’ll see.
If all dun go right, I’ll be curled up in front of the tellie watching Dubplate Drama marathons. I’m positively addicted to that show!
Anyway, anyway, anyway, be back inna minnit with some fresh content. If nothing else, I’ll embed the DD episodes here so you can watch along with me…
Meanwhile, what were you for Halloween? Got any pix? I went as Ali G, but I forgot to snap a pic. Me being a gal and all, I totally fooled all my friends. It was hilarious and so much fun not being recognized!
Ever wonder what it would be like to be a fly on the wall in Karl Lagerfeld’s life? The Lagerfeld Confidential will deliver just that. French director Rodolphe Marconi was Lagerfeld’s shadow for 6 months with camera in hand. The results are candid, intimate and captivating. Lagerfeld Confidential opened in a few cities this week and Vice mag had a chance to ask Marconi a few burning questions about the experience. ([More →])

Last week, I reported about a few songs Foxy Brown was working on for Brooklyn Don Diva before getting thrown in the slammer. One was “Mr DJ” featuring a sample from Barrington Levy’s “Here I Come (Broader Than Broadway)” song and the other was a collaboration with Mavado, “We’re On Fire.” She’s uploaded both plus “Lights Go Out,” also from her upcoming album. The Pack are upwardly mobile rappers! They hit the hyphy movement running with their smash hit “Vans” which was, of course, about sneakers. Their next big hit from the EP Skateboards 2 Scrapers was the two-wheeling “Ride My Bike.” Now the Yay Area boys are back with a new video - can you guess it? - for “In My Car.” From Skateboards 2 Scrapers comes complete… ([More →])
Kanye uploaded his new video for “Good Life” this week. The song is sunny and the vid is colorful. You can see a definite interest in Tokyo-style coming from Kanye’s work lately. The Michael Jackson sample also hints at future collaboration possibilities between the two stars. ([More →])
Gorillaz news! While the duo behind the cartoon band haven’t made any new Gorillaz tunes (they’ve been hard at work on a buddhist theatre production), there’s going to be a new release nonetheless. November 5th will be the day Parlophone releases D-Sides in the UK and Virgin will release it in the US on the 6th. D-Sides is a two CD collection of previously unreleased music. The first disc consists of early demos, previously unreleased tracks, plus b-sides from Demon Days. One of the unreleased tracks includes a reworked version of “Hong Kong”! ([More →])

All right Cure fans! It’s been a minute since Curefest took place and now the videos and reviews are flowing like rain! I’ve run round cyberspace, gathering links and videos of the three day festival at Trelawny Stadium (Big Ups To Don and Kizzy for the help!). What we have here is only the beginning, there will be more videos uploaded and more reviews published in the next few weeks. I will continue seeking them out and linking to them here. As I publish more roundups like this one, I will link to them at the bottom of this page. They will also show up as fresh posts in the reggae and news sections. So, you might want to bookmark this page or subscribe to the reggae RSS feed to get the updates. Now on with the show! ([More →])
Mavado is turning out to be the Jamaican artist of the year! His debut album on VP Records Gangsta For Life The Symphony of David Brooks blazed up the charts this summer and continues to win new fans with its dance-friendly rhythms and heartfelt lyrics. But despite his tuff exterior, the Real McCoy has a heart of gold. Now he’s sharing some of that gold with the Jamaican community, especially the youth. I’ve been receiving reports this week of a new charity organization that Mavado created in order to connect the island’s public schools to the information super highway. Mavado recognizes the importance of internet access in public schools to enhance education. ([More →])
South Rakkas Crew has joined forces with Mad Decent (Diplo’s record label) and is set to release a full-length LP of bumpin choons!
