Ninjaman is a class act. From lyrics to fashions he hits the mark with style: He’s smooth, cool and collected. He hits hard and swift and then stands back. His style is flowing and you never know what kind of weapons he’s hiding in the folds. A true ninja! ([More →])

Alicia Keys “No One” Remixes + Stalag Riddim
November 29th, 2007
When I heard that Beenie Man was meeting Alicia Keys to rehearse their AMA performance, I assumed they would be performing the remix that Beenie Man did of her song “No One.” Instead, the performance erupted into a red hot dancehall party! What an incredible surprise! Well, if you were left wanting to hear the remix still, you can listen to it here: ([More →])

Video Game Booty Banger
November 28th, 2007
Hardcore bangin techno, 8-bit video game music, and hip hop are all very high on my list of favorite kinds of music. It’s rare you hear all three combined, and more rare to hear it done well. There are a handful of mad tunes made with Gameboys, and a few with the Mario Bros. theme song, but “Tetris” by Dacav 5 is one of the best I’ve ever heard.
HearingTest rating: I just want to fire up the soundsystem and blast this! Wake up the neighbors! This one’s a banger!

2Pac & Dre Love Cali
November 28th, 2007
Classic west coast hip hop from back in da day! 2Pac and Dr Dre proclaim their love for the Golden State with a Thunderdome dance party. I think this video goes especially well with the new “Poison Dart” video from The Bug and Warrior Queen…
I Hit Pause On HearingTest Over The Weekend
November 28th, 2007
Aaaaaahhhhh, nothing like a long weekend to reboot the ol’ relax-o-meter… I’m not big on celebrating the supper that kicked off 500 years of occupation and genocide, a.k.a. Thanksgiving holiday in amerika. However, I do celebrate extra long weekends any chance I get! Turkey Thursday was my first real day off since Mutant Fest in June, so I had some hardcore chillin to catch up on… I started with a few comic books, a Metalocalypse marathon, spinning records for hours and watching old music videos. Escaping into alternate realities eventually led to deeper explorations of my own world - messing with my live gear, pondering life/work/existence/snow conditions, making mixtapes, etc.
Ahhh, this is the amerikan dream in action right here - the 4 day weekend!
This is the reason why not much changed on HearingTest over the weekend. It also explains why I am about to post a few blast-from-the-past type rewinds in addition to the usual forwarding of fresh news content. Now get ready for something old, something new, something remixed and Mr. T’s modded warrior class is blue! Stay tuned for some delightful sounds to Test Yr Hearing on!
How was yr weekend? Did you celebrate Buy Nothing Day in style? Any crazy turducken stories? Gather round the comment campfire if you have a story to tell!
The Bug Makes Dub Weapons For The Dancehall
November 27th, 2007
When asked to describe the sound of The Bug, Kevin Martin responds, “Beats, Bombs, Bass, Weapons, Congestion, Space, Concussion and Seduction.” !!Sounds Beautiful!! Martin [the man behind the bug] has refined an arsenal of tuff tunes (with Flowdan and Warrior Queen passing the mic) and wicked remixes (for Ghislain Poirier and Thom Yorke of Radiohead) into dangerous dubplate killahs! Perhaps the don of toxic dancehall finished construction on his urban-legendary soundsystem and now makes distorted ragga dubs on a barricade of bassbins instead of a pair of studio monitors! “Poison Dart” is The Bug’s most recent weapon of choice: a staggering riddim made razor-sharp by Warrior Queen’s defiant tongue. It’s a heavy tune that aches to be played BiG and LouD in an open space where the bass can unfurl into the wide wobbling synths that decay into long echoes.
HearingTest has the brand new video for “Poison Dart” and details on the remixes by Skream, South Rakkas Crew, Stereotyp and a Flowdan version that will accompany the originals to be released in December. I’ve even posted Warrior Queen’s lyrics for “Poison Dart” which aim Warrior’s wisdom at young shottas inna de dance. If your native tongue is more patio than patois, these subtitles might help. Shaggy & Ali G & Me Julie
November 26th, 2007
A love song to Julie’s babylons by fave youth correspondent (Ali G) and Mr. Lover Man (Shaggy)…
Ali G is insanely clever. (Don’t be fooled by the low-brow character he portrays in this video). He possesses the ideal combination of charisma, satire, intelligence, wit, insight and pure niceness that’s necessary to get away with the ridiculous situations he sets up. I can never get enuff, so I’m dropping this video into the archive for endless enjoyment.
BOOYAKASHA! Respek!
Blazin With Ghislain: DJ C, The Bug, Modeselektor And T.I.
November 22nd, 2007
Ghislain Poirier - Montreal’s instigator of electronic mayhem - has a new album called No Ground Under. Ninja Tune released the LP in Canada, but it won’t be released in the US until early 2008. The first single off No Ground Under is the ragga/dancehall tune “Blazin” featuring Face-T. The EP single includes the original album edit and remixes by The Bug and DJ C. In the meantime, here are 2 different remixes of the same song that are not part of either release: a Modeselektor remix and a second remix from DJ C that’s more of a mashup. ([More →])
