Cuts From Ninja Tunes Comp [Audio]
January 30th, 2008
Ninja Tune is releasing an epic compilation album called You Don’t Know: Ninja Cuts that drops March 11th. It weighs in at 3 CDs, stacked with 50 Big Tunes from 1998-2008, from Mike Ladd to Pop Levi and from Roots Manuva to Wiley! Last year, HearingTest featured a few of the tracks that made the cut:

The version of “Free” by DJ Kentaro on You Don’t Know: Ninja Cuts is actually an “Armani XXXChange Remix” and the version here is the original edit from Kentaro’s Ninja Tune LP Enter. (I don’t have the remix yet)

Dizzee Rascal Hits US With Bonus Tracks
January 29th, 2008
Almost a full year after its UK release, Dizzee Rascal’s Maths + English will finally get a proper release in the US. Of course, the album had more UK appeal, from Dizzee’s dialect to his collaborations with other UK artists Lily Allen and the Arctic Monkeys. That might be why it was nominated for a Mercury Prize and a MOBO in the UK but received little recognition across the pond. But the album also features a collaboration with Underground Kingz Pimp C and Bun B on the track “Where’s Da G’s”, so it should do well in the States too. ([More →])

January 29th, 2008
I love this new grime vid with 3Face, Tinchy Stryder, Nolay, wretch 32, and Nasty Jack called “Different World” (Blackjack Remix). Some Alice In Wonderland kind of shizzle…. Of course, Nolay brightens up any mix.

New Audio For A New Year
January 27th, 2008
New year = New TUNES!! I updated the music player in the left sidebar with all new tunes for 2008. There’s an absolutely trippy new Erykah Badu song, a great grime remix with Mumdance and Jammer, some Bassline yumminess and more. I’ll be adding more very soon. It’s been a chaotic few weeks at the ([HT]) HQ as far as internet technology goes. First we lost our DSL for 2 weeks, then the server was half-way down. Luckily, the website worked ok for most of it, but I haven’t been able to upload audio and video all this time, so things really slowed down. It seems we are back in action now, so expect onslaughts of multimedia in the coming weeks.
I’m also putting the finishing touches on a new concert review for the Eek-A-Mouse and Pato Banton concert in SF this month. That will definitely be published this week, so check back or subscribe to the RSS feed.
Also, you might notice that the menu at the top of the page has changed slightly to squeeze in a link for concert reviews. Now there is a channel dedicated to multimedia concert reviews and the link is at the top of every page.
Thanks for reading!!

DJ/ Rupture Discusses Ragga-Jungle With Remarc
January 22nd, 2008
I live in the kind of haus where random zines and propaganda often appear and disappear like time-traveling nomadic visitors. This week, an issue of Cyclic Defrost from January 2005 appeared on the kitchen table. Cyclic Defrost, one of the most exciting and well produced zines on experimental music culture, is based in Australia; and the fact that I picked up an issue from January 2005 and thought it was something fresh will attest to how ahead of the game their content is. This particular issue featured an interview with DJ/Rupture about his travels, his music, his influences, etc. A Boston-native who was living in Barcelona at the time of the interview, Rupture is an extremely active experimentalist who mashes everything from world music to breakcore and makes it sound good. Rupture recently teamed up with one of NYC’s hottest producers, Matt Shadetek, to form the multi-media platform that we often Big Up on this site: Dutty Artz. ([More →])
