DJ Q’s new video for “Bad Boys” featuring DMX, Junior Reid and Dawg E Slaughter is going to be epic. At least it looks like it will, judging from the new trailer:
“Bad Boys” is on DJ GQ’s Let ‘Em Know- The Album and the video was produced by Kareem Eduoard. What do you think of this new trend of music videos having trailers like big movies?

Mavado was pure fire last year and he’s set to keep blazing up the reggae and hip hop scenes in 2008! His highly-acclaimed debut release Gangster For Life was just the beginning, the Jamaican deejay has since recorded with Foxy Brown, Wyclef Jean and Uncle Murda. Near the end of 2007, he attended DJ Khaled’s b-day bash in Miami and the two must have really hit it off because they spent the next day in the studio, laying down a track for Khaled’s album. These Freeway videos all dropped at the same time over Thanksgiving week, but I must have been too dazed from the turkey/tofurkey to post them. They still be fresh, so I figure better late than never. “When They Remember,” “Still Got Love,” “It’s Over” and “Lights Get Low” are all on Freeway’s latest album Free At Last on Def Jam. You can grab the audio for the first tune and watch videos for the other three: ([More →])

Philly-based beat meister Diplo and UK house/bass producer Switch have each assisted M.I.A. to create the sick riddims that she sings over, they’ve toured together, and now they’re finishing up a joint album. Diplo produced a lot of the music on Arul and Switch traveled all over the globe with M.I.A. to help her record the songs for Kala. Last year, Diplo went to Jamaica to record dancehall’s superstar deejays (rappers) for a new project with Switch. I can’t wait to hear these tunes, they’re going to be wiiiiiiiicked!! Diplo and Switch’s bumpin electro-influenced dancehall-hip hop hybrids with thick Jamaican patois rapping on top? Sounds perfect! ([More →])

I am not a big Usher fan, but the first single off his new album “Dat Girl Right There” has me very intrigued. First of all, it features Ludacris who I AM a fan of and the music is downright different for a hiphop/RnB tune. It’s funky electronica, with thick bass, but minimal beats. Luda even raps over a section with no beats at all… Check out the audio from this youTube thang:

With all the technical difficulties lately, I’ve fallen far behind with a lot of things I wanted to post here. So, I’m going to do my best to catch up, which will involve posting a lot of videos that came out in the last month or so. This is one of them: the video from B-more legend DJ Blaqstarr for “Shake It To The Ground/Crazy Leg Edit” featuring Rye Rye.

Check it: Missy’s new video for “Ching-A-Ling/Shake Your Pom Pom” is finished and you can watch it here in 2D or 3D. It sounds like “Shake Your Pom Pom” is on the same riddim as Eve’s “Tambourine”.
3D version - Missy Elliott - “Ching-A-Ling/Shake Your Pom Pom”:
If you watch the video with 3D glasses (the red and blue kind) the video online works okay, but I bet it really pops if you watch it on the tele! Especially that kid doing the wave into the camera - right into your face! I love 3D effects and I say the best way to beat piracy is to offer something people can’t get at home. That’s why I go to IMAX movies - especially 3D IMAX movies - instead of watching them at home. The movie industry and the music industry could take advantage of the fact that 3D doesn’t upload well. Missy Elliott is always taking her game to the next level. Everything she does sets trends and I would love to see the industry follow her latest move.

A new compilation from Ninja Tune - You Don’t Know: Ninja Cuts - is filled with 50 tunes that map the sonic territory the label has explored during it’s 2 decades in the biz and adds sonar imagery of what lies ahead. The 3 CD set features tracks all the way 1998 reppin for the label’s early days (Mike Ladd’s rare classic “Blah Blah”) and big hits from every year since plus 9 tunes slated for release later this year! (Yet-to-be-dropped tunes like John Matthias’ fragile and ethereal “Evermore”, The Bug’s toxic dancehall slayer “Poison Dart”, and Pop Levi’s superb, princely “Dita Dimone”…) To celebrate such an amazing audio history, the Ninja Tune extended family is hosting a 3-room banger at Electrowerkz this month that features many of the artists on the 3CD collection!

Every time I see an amazing lineup for live music, like this one for Ninja Tunes’ record release party or the Bang Face Weekender, I have to ask myself an important question: Do I live on the wrong side of the pond? When every flyer and lineup that I drool over is happening in or near London, it gets more and more difficult to understand why I stay in the US, with the ever-weakening dollar. This is the time of year where party people in the UK and Europe start to promote major music festival weekends that have me gazing at my passport with longing. Next up is a Ninja Tune extravaganza at Electrowerkz in London. On 15th February, a massive posse of premier musicians will take over 3 whole floors of the Electrowerkz nightclub to celebrate the new release of YOU DON’T KNOW: NINJA CUTS - one floor for each CD in the monster compilation! (There’s a whole post about the Ninja Tune compilation too, so scope that next.) ([More →])
