Champion of left-field/experimental music on BBC radio, Mary Anne Hobbs is a musical pacemaker on the pulse of what’s pumping out of the global underground. Her weekly show is like a time-release capsule of the latest, greatest dubstep, electronica, techno, breakcore, hip hop or whatever new thing she digs up during the week. If you like San Francisco’s underground electronic music scene or club nights like Surya Dub, An-ten-nae events or the like, you won’t want to miss Mary Anne Hobbs performance on Thursday, January 29th in SF:
I spoke with Winston Holness aka Niney The Observer just after today’s inauguration ceremonies ended. (Niney was in London and I in California, but we were both aware of what was taking place in D.C..) We got on the topic of today’s youth and generations to come, when Niney compared the positive attitude and message that Obama brings to U.S. government with the attitude and vibe that today’s music should have. He said music changes the world, so it should be positive.
Those who know reggae’s history, know that Niney the Observer is deeply rooted in the evolution of its sound. Niney came up from the streets with a rebel sound and attitude at a time when recording studios were accessible to the people for the 1st time. (Similar to independent labels sprouting up to reduce dependency on the majors…) Niney launched the Observer label in 1971 with “Blood and Fire” which in turn influenced the music of Big Youth, Burning Spear, The Wailers and more. (I credit Niney for the change in The Wailers’ sound when it became more militant, rebellious and dark – my favorite era of Wailers music.) Niney has worked with many of reggae’s most recognizable names like Lee Perry, Dennis Brown, Beenie Man and Freddie McGregor (father of Steven di Genius McGregor who’s killing it in dancehall today).

Happy New Year!! (To those of you on the Gregorian calendar… We also celebrate Chinese New Year here at HearingTest.)
I just wanted to holla to the world and let you know that we’re back at the controls here. I’ve been away at j-school and didn’t have time to keep the blog active until now.
Stay tuned, we’ve got some HOT content to release here soon. We’ve got new tunes from M.I.A., Toddla T, Damien Marley and more. I’ve got audio, video and transcripts from interviews with The Bug, Warrior Queen, Elephant Man, Richie Spice and MORE!!
Hopefully I’ll be too busy snowboarding all weekend to get any of this done, so check back next week for the first drops. Then, keep coming back as the trickle turns into a tidal wave of great stuff.
Damn it feels good to be rockin this site again. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
HearingTest isn’t dead, only hibernating. This has been a truly incredible summer and I’m sorry I haven’t had more time to post about it yet. As mentioned previously, I started journalism school this semester and it’s a lot more work than I anticipated. I expected a lot of work and fast deadlines, but I never imagined it would prevent me from posting here as well.
Therefore, there won’t be much happening here for awhile. If you love reggae and dancehall music, feel free to check out my personal site:
I don’t talk much over there, but I’ve been posting photos that I took at numerous reggae festivals and concerts this year. I also re-post a lot of reggae/dancehall/grime/dub stuff I find around the web as a way of compiling research for my next book and links into one place. I’m working on a new book about reggae culture worldwide and its influence on grime, rap, drum n bass, digidub, etc. so that site is helping me organize info.
Of course, if it’s music news, reviews and audio that you’re looking for, be sure to check out MOG.com. Numerous bloggers post about almost every kind over there, not to mention the numerous blogs that are part of MOG’s Music Network.
I’m not interested in retiring this site, so I will post here again someday. But with everything going on in the world right now, both good and bad, this site just isn’t a priority at the moment.
Thanks for all the love and support thus far! Stay strong!
Roots Manuva and Toddla T will be the source of some major heat waves this summer, from spontaneous combustion on the dancefloor to sweltering temperatures in the the streets.
It started with a seemingly innocent video from the Sheffeel producer and the cross-cultured lyricist, called “Sound Tape Killin”. I’ve been MAD about that tune since I first heard it/posted it, moments before it induced an early Spring in the western States. Then, the video for “Buff Nuff” appeared on the web and, despite a truckload of ice cream on the scene, ladies swooned and nearly melted anytime Manuva was in the vicinity. Roots Man handed out the frozen treats as quickly as possible, but was unable to reverse the feverish effects of Toddla T’s smokin dancehall riddim.
Slime & Reason Is IN This Season
Now, the impending release of a new Roots Manuva album and the subsequent rise in body temperatures threatens to warm the globe like a Bikram yoga classroom. A world filled with sizzling hot bodies, buff enuff to bounce a quarter (or quarter OZ) off of and glistening with sugary sweat, all because 2 English lads combined Slime & Reason in 2008. Like PB and J, ice cream and exercise, love, war, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Slime & Reason represents 2 very different sounds that were meant to be mixed together for the betterment of humankind. But there’s plenty of tunes on the album I haven’t heard yet, so I’m sure Roots and T will enlighten us soon enough. In the meantime, invest in lemonade stands, ice machines and igloo-rich real estate, coz it’s gonna be a wicked hot summer!
More deets from the press release:
Feel like something is missing from your life? Not quite sure what? Is it a new record from Roots Manuva? Or a beautiful body beside you in bed? Either way, all your problems are solved.
Mr Manuva comes blazing back into action with the wonderful “Buff Nuff,” a slice of Sheffield dancehall cooked up by the so-hot-it-hurts Toddla T, mixed by the mighty Ross Orton (M.I.A. etc) and weighed down with lyrical wonderment and silly genius by the one and only Rodney Smith.
Manuva’s own productions range from the skanking carnival anthem “Again & Again,” through the melancholy funk of “C.R.U.F.F.,” the electro-Bach rhythms of “Kick Up Ya Foot,” the lof-fi Gospel of “A Man’s Talk,” the roots stylings of “The Show Must Go On” and the analog-synth attack of “It’s Me Oh Lord.”
But as a vocalist, Roots has also been reinvigorated working with young producers Toddla T and Metronomy. There are three Toddla tracks here (including “Buff Nuff,” the first single taken from the album) and they represent some of the funniest, most loose-limbed music Rodney has produced in years. In addition, Metronomy’s “Let The Spirit” is one of the standouts of the record – a gorgeous piece of “blue-eyed” electro-funk which will be soundtracking our lives for a long time to come.
The halt in new content here is congruous with how busy I’ve been in the “real world” lately. Last weekend, I had a BLAST at the CaribbSumFest in Long Beach. I snapped some of the most exquisite photos of my career with my new Fuji SLR digicam which I’m now in lOve with. I’ll post those as soon as I get them organized. Also, I uploaded pix from the Dizzee Rascal concert. If you missed the post before this one, jump over there to see the photo stream from my flickr…
Coming up this weekend, I’ll be swooning over Sizzla, Turbulence and Elephant Man at the Seabreeze Festival. So if you’re near Long Beach on Saturday, drop by and say hi. I’ll be in the photo pit again with my Fujifilm, so you can live vicariously wherever you are as soon as I upload the pix.
I wish I could say that things will return to “normal” around here after that, but I think it might be awhile. I’ll probably have to reduce the number of news posts and focus on feature articles with more substance. I just cut my hours at MOG this month, but it’s to make time for school. I haven’t taken more than 1 class at a time for years, so I’m actually pretty excited about it! The classes are journalism related, so I may use this space to explore homework themes or post photo projects. It should be interesting at least. Not sure what this site will be like for the rest of 2008, but I know I won’t abandon it any time soon. I only wish I could incorporate more than music into this space. In the winter, all I really want to talk about is snowboarding and come Spring, I’ll be trying to wrap up work on a new Dancehall/Dub/Jungle/more Scrapbook so it can be published before Thanksgiving.
As you can see, it’s a busy year for up and coming historians like myself. So much to experience, document, hone, tailor, process, upload and present for public perusal. I’m loving every minute of it, so something good has got to come of it.
Maybe I need a personal assistant who works for coffee and sugar highs? Or maybe I just need to outsource some of the stuff I shouldn’t be stuck on, like website overhauls. If you have any suggestions, feel free to email me. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy a nice fat blunt. You deserve it! Lighta!!!!
Wow, Weezy really didn’t put much effort into his new video for “A Milli.” The production is so lo-fi compared to the vid for “Lollipop.” Ladies, however, will enjoy watching Wayne Carter strut around with no shirt on and the part where he poses with the super-shorty is adorable.
…Loefah + Switch + Matty G – Chinese New Year In SF – February 8th, 2008…
Switch didn’t show, but Matty G (SF’s own dubstep defender) and LOEFAH were dropping bass frequencies like they were trying to make diamonds out of the people on the dancefloor. Serious PRESSURE mate! My mates and I were heading straight up into the mountains afterwards for a full weekend of snowboarding, but we danced til our knees felt like jello anyway. ([More →])
…DJ C + Ripley + Kid Kameleon – Surya Dub in San Francisco – May 24, 2008…
DJ C performed an incredible set – full of treats and surprises – at Surya Dub, San Francisco’s BEST dubstep event. The monthly party, held at Club 6 in SF, is hosted by 2 of DJ C’s long-time pals (almost as far back as his Toneburst days in Boston!) – Ripley and Kid Kameleon. Most of the night, I was too busy dancing to remember my duties as a reporter. The string of Top Rankin Selectahs kept the energy high with a mix of dubstep, ragga, jungle and other bass-loaded sounds. ([More →])
