If you have never been to a proper dancehall concert, where artists display their prowess via audience interaction, shout outs, dance moves and all kinds of antics that strengthen the bond between the artists and the dancehall community, here’s what you’ve been missing! Elephant Man - notorious as being the most brash and eclectic of all dancehall artists - brought pure FIRE to NYC’s On Da Reggae Tip concert this year! With an audience well versed in dancehall culture, from its dance moves and its “slackness” (sexual inuendo) to the importance of family and society, Elephant Man performed a coming-of-age ritual for RnB singer Chris Brown.
The veteran deejay pulled Brown up on stage during the concert and even though he just turned 18, Brown is obviously very familiar with dancehall’s specific dance steps. He kept up brilliantly with Elephant Man as they performed a call and response thing - Elephant Man would call out the name of a dance and Chris Brown would respond with the proper moves… Their combined performance is fantastic, ridiculous and hilarious! Brown seems a natural ragga deejay, I can’t believe he’s not one!
