2007 is the year of the mash-up. Crossing songs, crossing genres, crossing boundaries. It’s been buzzed about in the blogosphere, in Congress, and at the kitchen table. What used to seem like impossible combinations no longer even raise an eyebrow. So you probably won’t stare in disbelief when I tell you that a record label known for releasing nothing but stellar, non-mainstream metal is releasing a hip hop album. Guess who is putting out who….
Hydra Head Records, the label that brings us Pelican, OXBOW , Isis, Boris, Merzbow and others, announced that they will release the first hip hop album in their catalog. The album is by none other than MC Dalek and Oktopus and it’s called Deadverse Massive Volume 1. According to Hydra Head, the album will “unfurl a collection of dream-like instrumentals, ten-ton remixes (including Enon’s unforgettable “In This City”) and scarce gems from the last seven years.” Hydra Head also describes the album thus:
Over the ominous grind of metallic friction and industrial-strength beats, MC Dälek flows like silk on glass, foregoing all the usual hip-hop lyrical conventions for something darker, more textural, and infinitely memorable.
