Daniel Johnston fans in the UK will soon have the opportunity to scrutinize the man’s artwork up close and personal. alt.gallery in Newcastle will open an exhibition of his artwork on Tuesday 4th September and it will run until 10 November.
From the gallery website:
This is the first UK retrospective exhibition of work by the US musical cult legend, Daniel Johnston, presenting over forty of his drawings alongside early tape covers and rare 7” record sleeves. …
This exhibition aims to highlight the recurring themes, characters and belief systems within his work, in a career that spans over twenty years. His visual art presents us with an evolving mythological universe made up of characters from his childhood passion for superheroes, Godzilla, King Kong and Bible stories. It shows a world in which there are battles between good and evil, with a pathos, simplicity and undeniable humour.
Dreamy. The exhibit is titled “Daniel Johnston: It’s a Beautiful Life” and it’s part of North East’s annual Design Event.

When I went to the alt.gallery website, I noticed something else that is pretty rare and exciting - they have extended the Harry Smith exhibit through this week, and then it will be dismantled. I am, again, too jealous of UK peeps mobile enough to check out all the killer art and music going on. If pix are allowed - could someone take a camera and then post what you find? Thanks.
