Erykah Badu Heals Hip Hop With Honey

February 19th, 2008

The lovely Miss Erykah Badu is celebrating her 10th year in the music biz with the recent release of “Honey.” The song was released on November 20th and it is the first single from her new album. The album is set for release on Erykah’s birthday, February 26th and is titled New Amerykah.

Erykah Badu Is As Sweet As “Honey”

“Honey” is soulful and gritty with fabulous beats from 9th Wonder. 9th Wonder recently put out his solo debut album, Dream Merchant Vol.2 and has been providing music for The Boondocks cartoon. In addition to 9th Wonder, the new album will also feature music by Madlib, Mike “Chav” Chavarria and R&B singer Bilal. The label says it will be issuing a “special, 12-inch pink wax edition… available only to DJ’s next month and will feature album tracks, ‘The Healer’ and ‘Real Thing.’”

Badu, who claims that she is a performance artist first, even before a singer, stated, “The music is the star, I just laid down my vocals and let the music breathe while the melodies tell the stories.”

“Healer” is also on the new album:

Badu recently made a guest appearance at the Stones Throw show in NYC (December 2nd). Check out some amazing pix of the soulful singer at Village Slum.

She also runs a community centered Theater in Dallas, her native home, called the Black Forest Theater. It hosts afterparties for all the big hip hop/RnB/soul groups that play in Dallas and a non-profit revitalization project. According to the Black Forest my$pace page:

“Two words: Prince afterparty.
Two more words: Snoop afterparty. Get the idea?

When the baddest muthas come to Dallas, the real happening is at Erykah Badu’s South Dallas club. A 1940s movie house that had fallen into disrepair, the Black Forest has been reimagined as a thriving cultural spot, with hand-painted murals, checkerboard floors, lush green walls, and good sound and lighting.

This is all thanks to Ms. Badu, who uses the space as ground zero for a South Dallas revitalization project called Beautiful Love Incorporated Non Profit Development (or BLIND). Semi-regular entertainment comes from Mizz B herself, along with soul, R&B, hip-hop and rock acts from around the community.

Notice that word: community. ‘Cause even though Black Forest may host some of the biggest names in music, ain’t no question whose home this really is. Prince may be on the marquee and Erykah Badu may be on the lease, but this place belongs to South Dallas.”

My heart and thoughts go out to her, as she was a supporter of Pimp C…
