Fugees Gets Kiss Of Death From Pras

July 19th, 2007

Fugee fans and Lauryn Hill fans beware - this post is not pretty. But, from what Mackenzie said on MOG last week, neither was Lauryn Hill’s last performance. I usually step real wide of any news that is based on defamation, like who got arrested and who’s in rehab, etc. coz I figure it happens in a world that most of us can’t relate to. It’s too easy to be judgmental of other people’s actions when we are never faced with the same choices as the rich and famous. This story toes that line, but I feel it merits attention…

I was one of the many old skool Fugee fans that thought a reunion would be a beautiful thing if they ever got into the same room together without attacking each other. Alas, it looks again like this is just too much to hope for.
Pras spoke to Billboard recently about the projects he is focusing on these days, and the Fugees is not one of them. The purpose of the interview was probably to hype a new film that documents Pras living on L.A.’s Skid Row. While telling Billboard about the film, the subject turned to the prospect of a new Fugees album, with Pras basically reading the last rites for the Fugees. Here’s what he related to Billboard:

“We went in the studio and recorded a couple records that were incredible. But, to put it nicely, it’s dead,” says Pras. “Me and Clef, we on the same page, but Lauryn [Hill] is in her zone, and I’m fed up with that sh*t. Here she is, blessed with a gift, with the opportunity to rock and give and she’s running on some b*llshit? I’m a fan of Lauryn’s but I can’t respect that.”

Yikes. I guess living on Skid Row, with rats and dope fiends, puts things in perspective. Too bad though. Pras is plenty busy anyhow. In addition to Skid Row hitting theatres on August 24th, he also has a solo album that should be released by year’s end, he appears in the film Six Bullets, and he is starting a non-profit organization in NYC. The album will be titled Experience and Pras recently filmed part of the video for “Pop Life,” the album’s first single.

Bounty Killer + Fugees “Hip Hopera” (horrible visual, sorry - good audio tho) -
