HearingTest Is A Green Machine!

HearingTest has an ear for environmentally sound practices. Not only do we try to highlight what bands and businesses are doing to reduce their impact on the earth, but we try to practice what we preach as well. To achieve this, we have taken certain steps to make HearingTest as green as possible. Here’s what we are doing:

Green Hosting

This domain is fantastically hosted by the good folks at Dreamhost. They are a worker-owned company and 100% carbon neutral. They are the nicest company I have ever dealt with to boot! For more information about their green practices, check them out yourself:

Green Web Hosting by DreamHost!

If you like what you see there, and you want to start hosting your domains with them, be so kind as to use any of our links when you sign up. That way, you will get totally affordable green hosting, and we will get a discount on our hosting fees for referring you! Then, once you are signed up - YOU will get discounts for everyone you refer!

Eco-Efficient Under The Hood Too

As if that weren’t enough, the computers used at HearingTest HQ are running on notoriously-efficient AMD processors.

HearingTest Uses A Low-Watt Colour Palette

The colour palette used here is dark for a very good reason. These colours are intended to save quite a bit of energy and therefore be more environmentally conservative. It takes more energy/electricity for a monitor screen to appear white, it takes half as much energy to appear dark blue or green and even less to produce black. In fact, black might be the total absence of light in this case. If you use a laptop, the difference is small, but for those who use CRT monitors, televisions, or even just monitors with a large screen size, the difference in wattage can be significant. Not to mention the many web workers who use multiple monitors at once! The difference between a black page and a white page is 15 watts! To use “millions-math” - if Google were to switch to a black background instead of their famous white background, they might save $75,000 of energy per year! I think this figure is very much on the conservative side, given the figures that were calculated. You can read more about this on Treehugger’s article about a Black Google:

The HearingTest HQ Uses Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs

Of course, we wouldn’t skip the single easiest and most important thing anyone can do to save energy! Our office is beautifully lit with CFLs and a skylight that pours natural sunlight into the room. We also recycle everything possible, and always bike or walk to work…

I will add more to this page someday - more of the ways we are environmentally active with HearingTest and about conserving energy on the internet, on tour, at home, etc.

So Stay Tuned!
And as always, THANKS FOR VISITING!!!
