The continued popularity of Drum N Bass is greatly due to the tireless efforts of UK’s DJ Grooverider. He’s one half of the BBC Radio show “Fabio and Grooverider” and has promoted UK dance music for as long as I can remember (since the ’90s at least). Unfortunately, he has been sitting in a Dubai airport jail for three months for pot possession and was sentenced this week to a full 4 years in jail!
Grooverider Sentenced To Spend Next 4 Years In Jail
DJ Grooverider, real name Raymond Bingham, was arrested last November for possession of marijuana at the Dubai airport. In January, he admitted to having 2.16 grams of pot in a pants pocket in his luggage - an amount that barely gets a slap on the wrist in the UK or US. The minimum sentence for drug possession in Dubai is 4 years in prison and this is the sentence that Bingham received in court this week. He has the next 2 weeks to appeal the sentence.
Last month, Dubai’s 7Days News reported:
In an interview given from his cell, the DJ previously said: “I just want this to end and to never come back. It was a small amount. Back home I would not even get prosecuted.” According to police reports, he was arrested at Dubai International Airport on November 23 after flying into the country to play a set at the city’s Chi at the Lodge nightclub.
