Havoc Drops The Kush List On Us

July 19th, 2007

On Monday, I reported that Havoc is preparing to launch his solo debut album, but at that time, I did not have much info to share other than a preview of the song “Be There.” That changes today, as I have the tracklist for the rest of the album. To recap, The Kush comes out on September 18th, it’s the first solo album by a man you may know well as half of Mobb Deep - he’s the half that does most of the beat production and has contributed beats to many other hit-making MCs - and the album is being set loose by Nature Sounds Records. What you may not have realized is that, while the other half of Mobb Deep, Prodigy, has already made his solo shizzle public, Havoc hasn’t had the chance due to the fact that his music is so sought-after by artists like Nas, Foxy Brown, 50 Cent, Lil Kim, B.I.G. etc. He’s constantly making rhythms for somebody, while continuing to keep Mobb Deep at the top of their game - to the sound of over 4 million records sold!

While Havoc has been a huge influence on the sound of NYC hip hop, it seems this time he was inspired by the grimey sounds of producers like Matt Shadetek and The Bug. Havoc himself promises that “The Kush is dark and gutter, I really wanted to go that direction.” And since this album is Havoc’s big chance to shine, he is keeping the cast of characters minimal. He could have had just about anyone he wanted on thew album, no one would say no to Havoc! Instead, it’s mostly him and his close circle. Says Havoc:

The Kush represents me as an individual and my growth as a producer and lyricist … I did not want a bunch of big stars on it, as it would have taken away from the real objective of the LP, which is grimy and down to earth.

There are a few friends on it of course, like Prodigy, Nyce, 40 Glocc, Nitti, and Un Pachino. Check it:
