I guess I missed it when Kanye West was on 60 Minutes. I don’t watch much regular tv, so I’m not surprised. I was happy to find this video of Kanye showing some reporter how to make a dope-ass beat on the Akai MPC drum sampler. He even had to define “dope-ass beat” for the reporter! ([More →])

The bear in Kanye’s new video reminds me of Mori Chack’s Gloomy Bear. Except this bear doesn’t end up slashing anyone with his razor sharp claws. And from the looks of things, it wasn’t easy! Maybe it’s because this bear was created by Takashi Murakami, who looks like he wouldn’t hurt anyone. Unless they didn’t like this video.

Chris Brown’s “Kiss Kiss” bumped Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat” from the throne and conquered the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart last week. “Kiss Kiss” is Brown’s second song to hit #1, his hit “Run It” was #1 in November 2005. Rakim is returning to the spotlight with the release of a concert DVD and a tour with a new album to follow. Sounds like he’s ready to make amends for 8 years of near silence! First up is the tour which is in progress right now - with Ghostface Killah, Brother Ali and Rhythm Roots Allstars. Kanye uploaded his new video for “Good Life” this week. The song is sunny and the vid is colorful. You can see a definite interest in Tokyo-style coming from Kanye’s work lately. The Michael Jackson sample also hints at future collaboration possibilities between the two stars. ([More →])

Dizzee Rascal scored four nominations for UK’s Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards. He is nominated for best UK male, best song for “Sirens,” best video for “Sirens” and best hip hop act. I hope he wins best video because I LOVE that “Sirens” video. Jay Z is very comfortable as president of Def Jam, and he doesn’t plan to give that up just yet. His three year contract will be up soon, but he says he intends to renew it. Unless that is, Columbia has an even more comfortable chair for him, near his buddy Rick Rubin. Jay-Z told the NYC radio station Hot 97 that he called to congratulate Rubin on his new job at Columbia, but that the two of them haven’t spoken about it yet. The executive rapper also chatted on the air about the upcoming head-to-head showdown between Def Jam’s Kanye West and Interscope’s 50 Cent when both release a highly-anticipated album on the same day - 9/11.
