This week there have been a number of good interviews and articles posted online from stellar writers immersed in the UK music scene. Rather than rehash what’s already been said, I’ve decided to resurrect the Rewind! (Rewind! is simply a roundup of links to what’s good, what’s new, wha gwaan on the web, and it used to be a regular feature here on HearingTest.) This particular Rewind! features links to some great articles written by a few music journalists that I enjoy reading: there’s a T2 interview, a Durrty Goodz interview, Grimewatch, proof that Grime’s Not Dead, plus video of Skepta in the BBC radio studios with Mary Anne Hobbs, Wiley clashing Ghetto, and a dubstep documentary! Murcof On Mary Anne Hobbs
September 24th, 2007
I just listened to the archive of the Mary Anne Hobbs show on BBC Radio 1 from last Thursday. It features a beautiful mix of exclusive tunes by Murcof. If you enjoy beautiful atmospheric electronica, definitely give this mix a listen. It will be available as streaming audio until the new show goes up late Thursday night/early Friday morning this week.

The show also includes plenty of other killer tunes by Terror Danjah & Durrty Goodz, Headhunter, Bola, Bob Marley and more. Tracklist for the entire show is also on that page.

Last week I mentioned that Ninja Tune and Big Dada would present an event curated by Mary Anne Hobbs in London on the 7th of July. I received more info about this event, so I want to share them with folks who will be in the London area that week.
Ms. Hobbs states that her desire for the lineup she has chosen is, “To bring together dark exotic underground textures of sound from the UK and internationally..”

Local – ‘They Are Local’ (Betulla)
MED – ‘Rhymes With An L’ from Peanut Butter Wolf presents Chrome Children Vol 2 (Stones Throw)
Jahtari Live Digital Laptop Reggae Set
Laurie Anderson – ‘O Superman’ (Nonesuch)
Burial starts off beautifully, lovely bass and dark synths. Hobbs keeps rolling out the dubstep for a while, including a fantastic dubstep riddim by The Bug with Flowdan pon di mic. This combo is amazing! Flowdan is pure spitfire Rastafari - like Ninjaman meets Sizzla inna concrete jungle! BIG TUNE! An interlude into experimental electronica and noise that sounds like Squarepusher left alone in a room with a toddler and a Casio, some relaxing dub frequencies that step up to UK steppers dub, building suspense, building intrigue for all these spacey sounds…. unless you skip ahead. A unique set from JAHTARI kicks in at 16:50 (BBC radio players use the time of the show). All spaced out, relaxing, digital dub. Beautiful stuff. Lay down with a warm wet cloth over your eyes or something, really relax and listen to this lovely sound. Enjoy! Then wake back up to a little Laurie Anderson and enjoy the last half hour of the show.

JAHTARI On Tour & Mary Anne Hobbs BBC Show
May 7th, 2007
Earlier, i pointed out a net-label called JAHTARI, where you can listen to streaming digital dub and reggae, or save a few releases for later… Well, i just got the scoop that Mary Anne Hobbs will be broadcasting the collective mind that is known as JAHTARI on her radio show which will broadcast either this week or next week. Mary Anne Hobbes is the dj and hostess of a radio show on BBC Radio, who specializes in “leftfield” music. She mixes and matches quite a bit of grime, experimental electronica, breakcore, noise, and lots of yummy bass beat heavy music. If you listen to this week’s archive, there is a remix of Beastie Boys’ “Paul Revere” (Best Element Remix from the LP- The Dedicated Beatheads Sound Convention Vol. 1 on Audiac) right around minute 16:54 i believe. [ok, technical detail - each show starts at 16:00 does anyone know why? and you can fast forward in 5 minute increments or 15 minute increments, so hit that 16:50 sweet spot and sit tight.] Mary Anne Hobbs show on BBC Radio 1 airs live in the UK every Friday morning (Thursday night for night-owls) 2AM- 4AM. It streams live over the internet at BBC Radio 1 MAH page and is archived for only one week before being replaced by the new show.
Watch Mary Anne Hobbs radio show page on BBC Radio 1 for the upcoming JAHTARI studio performance.
