Just in the nick of time, M.I.A. got her visa and is on her way to the US for her performance at the Siren Festival on Coney Island tonight. Close call too, I thought for sure she was going to have to cancel this show like Sasquatch.
There’s been rumours that her visa problems stem from family ties to a terrorist organization in Sri Lanka (where her family is from). You’ve probably heard of the Tamil Tigers, and no - they are not an indie band nor a high school sports team. M.I.A. says she thinks that her visa problems have been routine stuff for many UK bands and do not stem from her background or politically extreme lyrics.
The lyrics for “Bird Flu” wouldn’t raise flags, now would it:
