When I needed some fresh music today, I headed over to one of my favorite music streaming sites - the ever clever Podington Bear. Podington makes incredibly sweet, fun electronica music and makes it easily accessible in a stand-alone music player or podcast subscription. Well, quite unsuspecting of the momentous occasion I was about to encounter, I clicked over to PBear’s online den and LO and Behold! Today, Wednesday July 25th, Podington Bear posted his 100th hand-made track of 2007! That’s right, the prolific little bear has hand-crafted 100 songs since the first of January. He posts a new song every other day, despite being on the road pretty much constantly.

You may have caught the article I wrote, what seems to be ages ago (but was really April), that announced PBear’s intention to post 3 new songs every week of this year. Well, he has kept true to his word, and this month’s theme is “old school-80’s drum machines and synths on parade,” while staying within the fun and playful Podington style. The hundredth song is called “Hundy” - check it out. You might get hooked and half to download the Podington Bear widget for Macs or buy the entire box set which is currently running at a discounted price, but it will be sooooo worth it.

If you forget to bookmark Podington Bear’s site, you can find it anytime on the links page here at HearingTest under the LISTEN category. (Links button in the toolbar at the top of the page)
This is a great example of what I mean when I say new music distribution models that bring the listener right to the band without the messiness introduced by Big Record Companies. Podington Bear’s music is available on iTunes, but I bet he didn’t encode DRM into his files before submitting them. If you are unable to get them DRM-free from iTunes, you should contact Steve Jobs and demand it.
