Wiley, Dizzee, Kanye, Fitty, Shaggy, Marley All Up For MOBOs

September 5th, 2007

Dizzee Rascal scored four nominations for UK’s Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards. He is nominated for best UK male, best song for “Sirens,” best video for “Sirens” and best hip hop act. I hope he wins best video because I LOVE that “Sirens” video. Other competitors for MOBOs include WILEY, Kano, Kanye, 50 Cent, Common, Lethal B, Sway, Shaggy, Joss Stone, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jamelia, Tony Matterhorn, Stephen Marley, and many more!!

However, he won’t get my vote for best UK male because he’s competing with Kano, Lethal B, Sway and Wiley. Anyone that’s been reading HT awhile already knows that my heart belongs to the Godfather of Grime, Wiley! I don’t think it’s right to pit the teacher against the student, but I’m hoping that Wiley blasts all the competition to prove that nobody can eski better than the Eski-Boy!

Kano is also in the running for best hip hop act along with Common, Kanye, and 50 Cent.

Amy Winehouse has been nominate for best UK female, best song for “Rehab,” best video for “Back to Black” and best R&B act. She will be competing with Beverly Knight, Joss Stone, Corinne Bailey Rae and Jamelia for the best UK female award. You might have noticed that Winehouse and Dizzee will be competing for best song, for the second time. “Rehab” was pitted against “Sirens” for the Mercury Music Prize this year as well.

Shaggy will host the event (alongside Jamelia - whom he has already become enchanted with!) as well as compete for best reggae artist. I wish him the best of luck, he deserves best reggae artist this year. It will be a tight contest though - he’s up against the legendary soundsystem deejay: Tony Matterhorn, the tuffest gong from the studio to the stage: Stephen Marley, the chart-topping teen sensation Sean Kingston, and new-comer who appears on Shaggy’s upcoming album: Collie Buddz. Well, Tony Matterhorn totally deserves it as well, and no one could question Stephen Marley as a reggae A-lister (it’s brother Damien who has severely strayed from the flock), but I still hope Shaggy wins. He deserves the boost in his career, where the others are firmly seated at the top already.

Everyone can vote online, so if you feel inclined to participate visit the MOBO website. I’m going to tune in when it airs on BBC 3 TV on 19th September, if I can figure out how to get it here in the US. Otherwise, I’ll tune in with the rest of the globe on BBC 1 radio on 21 September.

BBC Online won’t let me watch their streaming teevee that they have for peeps in the UK. Wot’s up wit dat? I know it’s supposed to be available in the UK only, but I’m hoping their is a way around that for situations like these. Hit me up if you know how, otherwise I’ll have to find a recording on youTube the next day…)
