Little Boxes Of Sticky Weeds

September 22nd, 2007

I have enough trouble getting the theme song for Weeds out of my head, I really can’t imagine practicing it and performing it. I’m glad I don’t have to. The song is annoyingly catchy, but it’s extra popular due to the show featuring different versions by different bands. “Little Boxes” has been covered by Angelique Kidjo, Billy Bob Thorton, and Randy Newman. And now The Shins and Man Man.

The Shins

Yep, now you can listen to The Shins’ take on the catchy pop song as it streams from the Little Boxes of Weeds.

The Shins’ James Mercer says that their band had a “great time recording this” and “the song is one that I can very much identify with and a natural fit for the band.”

Little Boxes Made Of Ticky Tacky

The song was originally penned and recorded by Malvina Reynolds in 1962 as a criticism to “50’s suburban monoculture.” Reynolds was born in San Francisco and thus the song is presumed to be about Daly City, the southern part of SF which is filled with “Little boxes on the hillside/Little boxes all the same” as the song goes.

FYI, anyone can submit their cover of the theme song for a chance to win $10,000 and your song featured at the intro of the show. So, learn that tune, and submit via the Homegrown home page.

Man Man will actually perform “Little Boxes” on the next episode of Weeds, which also features a guest appearance by Mary-Kate Olsen. M-K plays a new girlfriend with strong religious beliefs in the upcoming episode. You can watch a clip from one of her scenes in the links below.
